We can’t all be blessed with the type of wide open spaces or eye-catching views we’d like at work. Nor can every business afford a costly expansion and renovation to suit their needs. However, there are measures you can take to maximize a small office space. Indeed, with a little creativity and a little elbow grease, you can transform a cramped workspace into a thriving mecca for your team members. So, here are four of the best office design practices for small office spaces:
Ditch the Clutter
The first (and one of the cheapest) ways to start optimizing a tight office is to remove any and all unnecessary items. This can be a time-consuming and thoroughly unglamorous task, but tossing out stacks of old papers, broken or unused appliances, or anything that is not essential to your business on a daily basis can do wonders for your office. Get out the trash can, it’s time to clean house.
Stack ‘em High
While your office might not be blessed with the horizontal width you’d like, there’s a chance you’ve got some vertical real estate to play with. If this is the case, considering stacking boxes of important items rather than stowing them away in desks or side-by-side. Not only can this be a great way to save space, but if arranged with an artistic eye, can make your office look cutting edge as well.
Buy a Mirror? Not Quite
Conventional design wisdom would dictate that if you want to make a space appear bigger than it is, you should invest in a mirror to “double” your room. However, this is hardly breaking new ground, nor is it always practical to go squeezing mirrors in an already small office. Instead, if you want to make your workspace “feel” bigger, draw back the blinds and open the windows. It’ll create the effect of greater size, with the added bonuses of sunlight and fresh air.
Be Creative
At the end of the day, your office is unique to you and your team members and should be reflective of that fact. So if you’re struggling with tight areas and running low on ideas, involve your coworkers in the project. They’ll likely have cogent ideas, and it’s never a bad thing to increase collaboration within the office!
